Combining the photographic series “Something in between” and “Shins & Cheeks” the exhibition shows two of the most relevant European photographic series about skateboarding and urban culture in the recent years.
Skateboarding and skateboarders are part of our daily routine in a newly constructed, demolished, partly rearranged and constantly changing urban habitat. They are continuously on recon mission concerning these changes. The Skateboard and the skateboarders pay tribute to to these changes, to the constant challenging of their will to innovate their personal level or even the one of the whole skateboarding world itself.
“Something in Between” depicts this search, the encounters while roaming the streets, the relationship between the photographer Sergej Vutuc and all the little things which connect him with skateboarding displayed in rough analog black and white photographs. His pictures are not about glamorous stunts and high profile events, they are raw impressions on friendship, the soul of skateboarding, facets of city-life and hidden gems.
“Shins & Cheeks” combines the portraits of 96 European skateboarders with images of their shins mounted on a wooden surface. With this work Jo Hempel and Gunnar Nicolaus connect the variety of characters found in the world of skateboarding with the topography of their legs due to all the scars and marks that are left behind after regularly hitting them with their boards. Showing professionals and amateurs from all over Europe it is a timeless social study displayed in color in a clean, nearly clinical way.
