Carhartt WIP presents the second edition of J.A.W Family Reunion that introduces three significant live shows in collaboration with Theo Parrish and his label Sound Signature. Two shows in Paris and Berlin will be featuring Doug and Jean Carn and their band celebrating the 50th anniversary of the label Black Jazz Records. The US spiritual jazz label was founded by Gene Russell in 1971, and stayed active until 1975. It functioned as an alternative to traditional forms of jazz including funk, free jazz and soul, bringing a fresh alternative that embodied the spirit of the black/urban awakening of the civil rights period. The label's music became popular through samples used by hip-hop artists such as Ice Cube and A Tribe Called Quest. The releases remain fan favourites amongst DJs, producers & record collectors worldwide and are widely considered spiritual jazz anthems. The artists of the label have never played together before, and never in Europe. Before their show, Theo Parrish and Nicole Misha will open the stage with selected records.
The other Berlin concert is by NYC born and raised multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, arranger and composer Leroy Burgess, whose impact on the history of dance music, from the birth of house to the founding of boogie and disco, is beyond measure. His work is a favorites in the record bags of Theo Parrish, Larry Heard, Ron Trent, DJ Spinna, Little Louie Vega and Motor City Drum Ensemble.
For the weekend J.A.W invites long-time and new friends to celebrate new ventures in Griessmuehle from Friday night until the early hours of Monday. You can expect extended sets from Theo Parrish and Mr Scruff, as well as special sound journeys from the likes of John Gómez, Marcellus Pittman, San Soda and Tone B. Nimble.
